Yamaha HTR 6230 Surround Sound…?

I’ve set up my Yamaha HTR 6230 Sound System with 5 speakers – two front, two surround sound, 1 center – and only 3 of the 5 speakers work at a time. When I go through the basic setup, all five speakers will work when they’re called upon as they should, but when watching tv or a movie, only the center speaker and the two rear speakers will work or just the two front speakers, never all at the same time. Changing the speaker option, “spA, spB or *nothing*” changes which speakers function. Again either the rear two and the center one or just the front two pending the speaker option selected. Please help with this, I’ve exhausted myself with frustration reading the manual, playing with settings, and going over my wire configuration, I’m losing hope…

Ok, so I looked up your receiver back panel. Found it here, is that it?

I think I know what’s going on here. On the upper speaker panel of connections that use the simple ‘spring clips’ do not connect your main left/right speakers there. That’s a B set.

Connect the left/right on the large 5 way binding posts on the bottom right. It’s listed as front A, and choose the A set when you are ready to go.

Connect your surround and center to the proper spot. Be careful, lots of people make the mistake of connecting each speaker to two reds or two blacks. This mistake is easy to make, and the receiver makers have no way of making sure that you don’t do this.

So at the left, it’s says ‘R’ for right, make sure your speaker gets one red one black. And make sure you keep every speaker ‘in phase’ there should be a color code, or other mark on your speaker wires. If one wire has a white line for example, make sure that every wire with that mark goes red for example for every speaker. if you don’t do that, some speakers will be out of phase, and you’ll have a strange or odd sound quality that you won’t be able to pin down, trust me on that one.

Now when you are done, there is one last thing to know. Surround sound does not mean sound from every speaker at all times, don’t be freaked out by that. It’s the job of the creator of the original soundtrack to steer sound to where it’s supposed to be. Your center is active almost constantly because that handles dialogue and main screen action. The left/right usually are not very active unless audio cues from the sides are needed, they are usually busy in loud action movies.

The rears can be down right dead at times, don’t stress it. They usually kick back and only deliver sound when needed. For example a scene in a crowded restaurant, the rears will have sounds of plates being bused, people making chit-chat etc, in action movies they can get busy but not at all times. You will rarely hear all speakers do something at the same time.

When two people are talking on screen, did you expect that sound to come from every speaker? That would be weird, when my friends talk to me, I don’t hear their voice coming form the front and the back right?

Make sure you are connected to a 5.1 connection. Only HDMI and optical or digital coaxial connections support this. And confirm you are in a proper surround sound mode, auto detect should work just fine. If your receiver doesn’t display dolby/dts digital or 5.1 or similar, you might not be in the right mode. You don’t want to be in dolby pro logic or any other simulated surround mode. Good luck.

e-mail me if you still have questions, I’ve connected tons of surround sound systems.
