Roberto Luongo was Checkerboarded by the Bruins
The one explanation that has not emerged as to why the talented Vancouver Canucks lost the Staley Cup is that Roberto Luongo and his team was unwittingly Checker boarded by the Boston Bruins. The term checker boarded is new to sports but very real.
It has happened before to another great goalie in the Stanly Cup that was suppose to have won the series he played with the Buffalo Sabres. It was not the final series as was the case here, but a harbinger of things to come for big time goalies. No one predicted in that series that Buffalo would win. The Sabres did something unique in that series. That Goalies name was Roman Checkmeneck. In the final game of that series, the Sabres scored six goals on their first eight shots. They won the game and series, with the final win 8-0. The Flyers were devastated, and it caused a long decline in the franchise and their position in the league. It did not start with the last game with the Flyers in Buffalo but built from game to game. The rapid, massive goal scoring attack that was created in the Sabre-Flyers series that Roman Checkmeneck was in the nets for, repeated itself for the Bruins-Canucks series. By the final game in the Boston-Vancouver series, the canucks were bewildered and confused. When the psyche of the team is built around the stability and exceptional performance of the goalie, and his performance is heavily compromised with rapid succession goal scoring, the teams psyche implodes, in particular when there is no logical answer.
Here is what happened. The Bruins somehow, and it was clear in the Buffalo-Flyers series, understood the weakest point, the most venerable area of Roberto’s game and shot only there. Every goalie has this area, even the best. If a team in concert, exploits that area, without the knowledge of the opposing team, you see the momentum, confidence, and ability of the opposing team question themselves and implode. If on the other hand they were aware of this technique, it would have offered an explanation, and an opportunity to reapply it to the other team.
Recognizing that this theory of checker boarding is new to sports and coaching, it is hard to accept. Having said that it is undeniable. If you think of it in terms of a hidden weakness discovered in an opponent, that has not been know, it is best understood. Think of David and Goliath. The small David knew and considered this. What will bring this giant to his knees? Where is he so venerable that without this aspect to his attack, I can then compromise his strength and defeat him. It was in David’s assessment his eyes. In that fabled story, he made a sling shot, took the giants sight, then attacked, brought him to his knees and concord him.
In a similar way the Bruins found a rapid goal scoring vulnerability in Roberto Luongo, exploited it game after game, and defeated the mighty Vancouver Canucks. The lesson here is that is not a Roberto Luongo issue for Vancouver. The coaching staff in Vancouver did not realize that the Bruins were going for their eyes, in a figurative way. They did not understand as Goliath did not, the vulnerability he had as a warrior, or they had as a team. Roberto is a great goalie. Understand this lesson and next year the Vancouver Canucks could win the cup. The expression that you don’t want to throw out the baby with the bathwater comes to mind. I am in Roberto’s corner and Vancouver should be to. Live and learn.
