Are there ghosts in the jungle? a skeptical scientist’s experience
Ghost at the Field Base
On one particular occasion, I was carrying out a research on the ecology and conservation of the gold lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia, Primate) in an ecological station in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and I arrived back from the field earlier than usual, because I had been left with the so-called “Tomato”, the red Volkswagen Beetle of the project, which saved time, as it didn’t take as long as if I had to wait for a lift. The field base was empty, because everybody had left early that morning, not returning until the end of the afternoon. A friend of mine, however, had stayed behind in the laboratory close to the house, some 30 metres
away, processing some golden lion tamarins that had been trapped, by fixing collars to their necks and dying their tail fur as part of her study. I parked the car close to a large mango tree between the laboratory and the house and walked over to where my friend was working. Suddenly, when I looked back towards the mango tree, I saw a white spectre slowly passing behind it, from one side to the other, moving as if in slow motion. Standing still, I watched the being vanish slowly before my eyes, but what intrigued me most was that I could not see a proper face or any other human feature for that matter; in fact, it was more like a spectre than a proper figure. To be very precise, it looked like a white walking gown, except that it was not touching the ground.
When I realised that I had just seen something inexplicable, I rushed to the lab to certify that I was not alone and to tell my friend what I had just witnessed. ‘You will not believe
what I’ve just seen behind the mango tree,’ I said. But, to my absolute astonishment, she said, ‘I know, I also saw it,’ and we both started laughing. She described the same details that I myself had seen and we convinced ourselves that what we had seen was beyond human understanding, although she insisted that she did not believe in life after death. Although we were convinced that we were alone, we suddenly heard a toilet flushing. As a result of all the recent goings on, it really scared us and so we decided to check who or what was inside the house. We walked slowly towards the entrance and as we got closer, we managed to shout, ‘Is anyone there?’ To our relief, we discovered that another girl had arrived earlier than us and was now relaxing back at the house. It is no surprise though, that she did not believe in what we had just seen. I have to confess that I never wanted to sleep alone in that house again and when everybody went to town on another occasion and I stayed behind, I asked the field assistants if I could sleep in their house close by. They were highly amused that I was too scared to stay in the house alone and started teasing me with stories of ghosts and spirits. Only after a long time did I finally manage to fall asleep. They also confirmed that other people had seen what they call “the ghost-girl of the mango tree”.
This is one of the various experiences that I had in various forests of Brazil, that I describe in my book: Amazonia and other forests of Brazil, by Janus Publishing, London.
