Should You Let Your Nanny Know About A Hidden Nanny Camera?
Many parents decide to install a hidden nanny camera so they can see what happens while they’re not around.
But even after deciding which camera to buy and installing it, there is another dilema left: should you or shouldn’t you tell your nanny about the camera?
There Are A Couple Of Factors That You Should Consider:
- How many cameras do you have installed – If you only install one camera, at the nursery or main living area, then telling your nanny about the camera means also allowing her to control what you see. If you install cameras in most parts of the house and the camera also includes audio recording, than it will be much harder to disguise
- How much do you really trust your nanny – If you trust her, and would like her to trust you, than telling your nanny can definitely build this trust. If you have any suspicions that your nanny is doing something wrong, than telling her will not make her behave better, but rather try to hide her behavior from the camera.
- Is this a new hired nanny or has she been working for you for long – If you have been working with your nanny for a long time, and have only now decided to get a nanny camera, then don’t your decision can make your nanny very uncomfortable and promote a negative work environment. A new nanny, on the other hand, is more likely to accept this as a general precaution measure and not be offended by it.
How to Tell Your Nanny:
If you’ve decided to tell, be sure to be kind and open about the subject when telling your nanny or babysitter. Say that you have installed the camera not because you do not trust her (or else she wouldn’t have been hired). Assure her that this is only a precautionary measure and emphasize the fact that this also allows you to view precious moments that you miss while being away from your baby.
If your nanny objects in any way, this is a big warning sign. Although most people feel uncomfrtable being taped and watched, your nanny should understand your feelings, as long as you are not directly invading her privacy.
