Importance of quality helical gears
Every machine is made up of different sets of parts, whether it’s some industrial gears or your gears in your car. For a smooth functioning of every machine, it is important that all parts are in good condition. Most of the manufacturing industries use these gears. Gears are generally used in pairs that have teeth for transferring of momentum. These gears make it possible for the machine to work efficiently. Generally industrial gears are made of solid metal for a smoother torque and longer life period. There are lots of different types of gears that are used by various industries, such as spur gear, helical gear, bevels, pinions etc.
Most of the parts that you see in machines are either spur gears or helical gears. These two gears are pretty much identical in appearance; the biggest difference between the two is the way their teeth are projected. Spur gear teeth are parallel to the gear, whereas helical gear teeth are slightly angled for more power and making it less noisy. A spur gear cannot produce as much power as the helical gear. As helical gear can transmit much more torque than spur gear, thus most of the industries prefer helical gears over spur gear. Helical gears are used where more power transmission and speed are required with lesser noise. Spur gears are used in machine where not much power is required and volume of noise is not important.
Generally, helical gears are based on cylindrical shaped surface, thus the teeth are shaped like helix. The biggest advantage of the helical gears is that they are designed to make less noise. Basically, such parts are used in machines where noise is big concern, such as automobiles. It is very important that the automobile’s engines should be silent or does not make much noise. Helical gears are used for designing the engines to reduce the volume of noise. The reason why these gears make less noise is that they do not come in contact with the entire base at once. Because of this design, their teeth contacts one by one producing lesser noise and same efficiency. Spur gears make more noise because their whole teeth contact the surface at once, creating greater force but louder noise.
