Types Of Steel Strapping Seals
Strapping seals are devices used to close off the ends of metal bands and straps. Since they are often subjected to significant amounts of force and torsion, the seals have to be as strong as the bands themselves. Any flaw that makes them weaker than the rest of the system would ensure that any catastrophic failure would start at that juncture. With steel straps commonly used to pack and secure expensive equipment and delicate cargo, any subsequent damage from a seal break can cost thousands or even millions of dollars.
There are several varieties of strap seals currently available on the market. They all have different designs based on their application. Each type has unique structural characteristics that sets it apart from the other kinds of seals,
- Stacked or magazine type seals are one of the more modern developments in sealing technology. These are a series of individual devices that interlock through tiny sculpted grooves in order to form a unified whole. This design allows even partials stacks to be fed into power strapping machinery.
- Push-on steel strapping seals are used for straps that are used with a dedicated tensioner. It pushes the front of the tensioner into the seal itself, thereby tightening the whole contraption. Some variants also feature flaps that overlap. This is a design modification to increase the seal’s load bearing capacity.
- The most widely used of all steel banding seals is the snap-on variant. This is because of its inherent versatility and ease of installation. It can be used for most straps and bands whether they have been tensioned or not. It’s not threaded; it is simply slipped onto the ends of the steel. Snap-ons are a fast and simple solution for most strapping applications.
- For bundling jobs of especially large volume, the seal of choice is the threaded kind. The need to screw it into place even before a tensioner is used ensures that it can reliably and safely hold an object no matter how large or heavy. If the device is to be used in conditions where it would be exposed to harmful weather, it is advisable to get rust-proofed variants such as blued or galvanized steel strapping seals.
