How to Care for your Hardwood Floors
Hardwood floors are beautiful. But to keep them beautiful throughout the years you need to care for them. This might be difficult, not because they’re particularly hard to clean, but because they’re so sensitive to many floor cleaning chemicals and soaps. Only use floor cleaners designed especially for hardwood floors. Never leave water on the floor because this will make the wood expand and possibly crack.
The easiest way to keep your hardwood floors looking nice is to not scratch it. So you might want to reconsider those high heel shoes and you’ll need to cut your pet’s claws. You can also lay a rug on places with heavy foot traffic or places of frequent spills.
Another thing you can do is to put a piece of felt under your furniture legs to keep them from scratching the floors.
It is advisable to sweep the floors at least once or twice a week and then to vacuum it as well. Vacuuming will get all the dirt out from the cracks of the floor.
If you spill water or any other liquid on the floor you need to wipe it up immediately to prevent the wood from expanding.
Now if you have a scratched, dirty looking or sun bleached floor that is in a desperate need of cleaning and refinishing there are different ways to get it looking as good as new.
Unless the damage of the floor is severe you can just screen and re-varnish your floors.
Screening is a process where you grind down the floor’s polyurethane finish so that you can re-varnish it.
If you do have a severely damaged floor you’ll need to sand it down before you can re-varnish it. There are many different sanding machines to can either buy or rent. Talk to your local hardware shop and they’ll help you get the right one for you.
You might need to replace a few floorboards too. Make sure you get the same wood in the same colour.
There are many different kinds of floor varnish with different sheen to them. There is high gloss, semi gloss and satin. You can get them as a spray on or a brush on, water based or oil based. To get you through this jungle of decisions, get advice from your local shop.
If you happen to get a small scratch on your floor but don’t feel that you need to re-do your whole floor, just fill it up with floor putty. When the putty has dried, sand and re-varnish.
