DIY TIP: Prevent Common Problems When Finishing Wood

It is a fact that a Do-It-Yourself home remodeling project, when done correctly, can save you almost half from your intended budget. Take for example RTA (Ready-To-Assemble) kitchen cabinets. These flat packs, also known as knock-downs have become very popular for a good reason: prices are kept low, but the craftsmanship and materials used on the product aren’t compromised. The only tradeoff is that most of the labor is passed onto the end user. However, this is actually one of the reasons why these furniture are becoming more popular, especially to DIY crowd.
You don’t have to be an expert to do a DIY job. Sometimes it is as easy as following a bunch of instructions carefully. Small projects like painting and finishing your kitchen cabinets is a good start, but although relatively easy, there are some common problems you’ll need to prepare for so that you’ll be able to complete your project without a hitch.
The very first thing you would want to do is to prepare the surface of the wood that you will be working on. Strip the surface of paint, if it is painted, either chemically or by using sandpaper. An electric sander would not be recommended here as you might dig too deep into the wood. Once the surface is free of paint or varnish, sand it once more, using a finer grit sandpaper as you progress until you achieve a very smooth, almost glass-like surface. Now the wood is ready for staining or painting.
Blotchy wood – This problem occurs when staining most soft or porous woods like pine, alder, spruce and fir. A solution to this would be to use a pre-wood stain conditioner. This partially blocks the pores and also enhances the grains of the wood.
Not getting the correct color or shade – Whether staining or painting, it is important to do a test first to see how the paint or stain would look on the wood. Keep the wood scraps or samples and test on them. Also, if you want to get a deeper, richer stain color, sand the surface of the wood with a rougher grit, or leave the wet stain longer before wiping it off.
Blistering paint – This can also happen with polyurethane finishes. This is caused mainly by moisture in the wood, but also by poor quality brushes and paint. Special conditions, like painting on a hot surface can traps solvent vapor as the paint dries too quickly. Make sure the wood is very dry but not hot before painting it and avoid painting during humid conditions or direct sunlight.
Sagging paint – Drip or sag marks can form on painted surfaces if the paint was applied too heavily, if the primer was not applied prior to painting or if the surface was not cleaned properly before the application. To avoid this, paint several thin coats instead of 1 or 2 thick coats and make sure that primer is applied properly before painting.
Dust in the clear finish – It may frustrate you that after doing everything correctly, your paint or stain job gets ruined by dust settling on it while drying. Once again, the trick to this is to paint several thin coats. Thin coats dry faster, allowing less time for dust to settle. Keeping your workplace clean and cleaning the surface in between coats will also help.
These are only some of the more common problems when painting wood. After you’ve painted your kitchen cabinets, you can now move on to other tasks, like painting walls. Most of the things you’ll learn on one project can usually be applied to another, and once you’ve gained enough experience you’ll have the confidence to take on much bigger projects.
