The unbroken thread that joins us
I always think its strange that in the royal family the title is inherited through the male line – this may be changing with our now slightly enlightened times of sex equality but is still embedded in many traditions. The reason that I think it is strange is biological rather than historical or sociological. We inherit much more genetic material from our mothers than we do from our fathers – even boy babies inherit much more DNA from the egg than from the male gamete. And this strand of chemicals which is the blue print for inheritance has in turn been inherited from his maternal grandmother and back and back through the female ancestors in an unbroken line. It is this mitochondrial DNA that is used to determine if a person’s ancestors were of Viking stock or originated in Southern Europe, for instance. Granted this DNA controls the action going on in the mitochondria (the sub-cellular organelles responsible for cellular respiration) rather than in the cell nucleus but it is ultra important. Babies get none of this DNA from their fathers – there simply isn’t room in the tiny sperm cell!
So that gets me thinking about the ancestors and instead of thinking about the differences between our centuries apart ways of life I was thinking about the similarities – the joy of cradling a healthy baby, the cycle of cooking and feeding your family, worrying about keeping a roof over your head (in the olden days quite literally!). One of the most human images and certainly one that instantly communicates family life and the love of children is that of the breastfeeding mother. The warmth, the close bond and the safety of being in your mothers arms is a universally understood message. In times past every mother would nurse her baby (with perhaps the exception of very high-born ladies who would employ a wet nurse)and so ensure that a nutritious feed was delivered with the minimum chance for contamination and at exactly the right temperature. Spooling forward to 2011 breastfeeding is still surely the best way to feed your baby but unlike the ancestors, mums today don’t have to pull up their shifts or unlace their bodices (brrrrr – chilly in an unheated and draughty medieval house!) they can wear stylish and comfortable Rooti Tooti breastfeeding vests and coordinating wrap tops and so keep warm while nursing and not be embarrassed by inadvertently exposing tummy or breast skin. Made in England from fabric that is custom dyed for Rooti Tooti the breastfeeding clothing range has been specifically designed to be comfortable to wear, to fit like a dream and wash beautifully. Wow – what would great great great Grandmother have given for a super soft Rooti Tooti breastfeeding top to make her life so much easier!
