Battery Recycling Guide and disposal for homes

Environmental hazards of batteries

People are using more and household batteries. The average person owns about two button batteries, ten normal batteries (A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, etc.), and discards eight batteries household per year. About three billion batteries are sold annually in the U.S. average about 32 per family or ten per person. A battery is a device electrochemically with the ability to convert chemical energy into electrical energy to power electronic devices. Batteries contain metals heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel, which can pollute the environment when batteries are disposed of improperly. When incinerated, certain metals can be released into the air or can concentrate in the ash produced by the combustion process.

Batteries can cause the following problems or risks potential:
bullet contaminate lakes and streams as the metals vaporize into the air when burned.
Contribute to gunshot heavy metals that potentially may leach from solid waste landfills.
bullet Expose the environment and lead water and acid.
bullet contain strong corrosive acids.
bullet can cause burns or danger to eyes and skin.

In landfills, heavy metals have the potential to leach slowly soil, groundwater or surface water. The batteries contribute about 88 percent of the total mercury and 50 percent of cadmium in municipal solid waste stream. In the past, batteries account for almost half of the mercury used in the United States and more than half of mercury and cadmium in municipal solid waste stream. When burned, some heavy metals such as mercury may vaporize and escape into the air, and cadmium and lead may end up in ashes.
The dangers of household batteries

There is controversy about the recovery of household batteries. Today, most batteries collected through household collection programs of batteries are disposed of in hazardous waste landfills. Even the stores and chains that have set back programs admit that often ends up in the trash. Not recycling facilities are known in the U.S. a practical and cost effective way to recover all types of household batteries, although there are facilities to recover some button cells. Battery collection programs tend to focus on the button and nickel-cadmium batteries, but can collect all household batteries due to the difficulty consumer in identifying the types of batteries.

This may change now that California has mandated recycling "dry cell" batteries.

Regulation

Many states have regulations requiring some form of battery recycling. California requires the recycling of almost all battery types.

The U.S. Congress Management passed the battery containing mercury and rechargeable batteries in 1996 to make it easier for manufacturers of rechargeable battery and products to collect and recycle Ni-CD batteries and certain small sealed lead-acid batteries. For these regulated batteries, the law requires:

Bullet Batteries must be easily removable from consumer products, to make it easier to recover for recycling.
Labels bullet Battery must include the battery chemistry, the "three chasing arrows" symbol and a phrase indicating that the user must recycle or dispose the battery properly.
bullet National uniformity in collection, storage, and transport of certain batteries.
bullet eliminate the use of certain mercury-containing batteries.
Types and uses of household batteries
Lead-acid car batteries

Nearly 90 percent of all lead-acid batteries are recycled. Almost every retailer that sells lead-acid batteries collects used batteries for recycling, as required by most state laws. Recovered from nickel-sized pieces crush and separate the plastic components. They send the plastic to a reprocessor for manufacture of new products Plastic and deliver purified lead to battery manufacturers and other industries. A typical lead-acid battery contains 60 to 80 percent recycled lead and plastic.
No lead-based Automotive Batteries

Gel cell and sealed lead-acid is used to power industrial equipment, emergency lighting, and alarm systems. The same recycling process applies as with automotive batteries. A car shop or a local agency may accept waste batteries for recycling.
Household batteries – dry cell

Dry cell batteries are alkaline and carbon zinc (9 volt, D, C, AA, AAA), mercuric oxide (Button, some cylindrical and rectangular), silver oxide and zinc-air (button), and lithium (9-V, C, AA, coins, buttons, rechargeable). On average, every person in the United States discards eight dry-cell batteries per year.

There are two types of batteries:
(1) primary – which can not be reused and
(2) secondary is also called "rechargeable" – those that can be reused.

German manufacturer of Rechargeable http://www.interbatteries.de/

UK manufacturer of rechargeable batteries http://gogo-power.co.uk/

Primary batteries are alkaline / manganese, carbon-zinc oxide mercury, zinc air, silver oxide, and other types of button cells. Secondary batteries (rechargeable) batteries are lead-acid, nickel cadmium, and potentially nickel-hydrogen.

Battery Data and Statistics:
Bullet Consumption
Americans purchase bullet 3 billion dry cell batteries each year to power radios, toys, cell phones, watches, laptops and portable power tools.
Bullet Within a battery, heavy metals, chemicals react with the electrolyte to produce energy from the battery.
bullet wet batteries, which contain a liquid electrolyte, commonly energy cars, boats or motorcycles.
Nearly 99 million wet cell lead bullets acid car batteries are manufactured each year.
bullet A car battery contains 18 pounds of lead and a pound of sulfuric acid.
Recycling and bullet
Mercury bullet was removed from certain types of batteries in conjunction with "Management Act battery containing mercury batteries," adopted in 1996.
Recycling batteries keeps bullet heavy metals out of landfills and the air. Recycling saves resources because recovered plastic and metals can be used to make new batteries.
Home bullet batteries contribute many potentially hazardous compounds for municipal solid waste stream, including zinc, lead, nickel, alkalines, manganese, cadmium, silver and mercury.
bullet In 1989, 621.2 tons of household batteries were sold in the U.S., which is twice the amount discarded in 1970.
bullet In 1986, 138,000 tons of lead-acid batteries were eliminated in the U.S.
bullet regular flashlight batteries can be discarded in the trash (at Overall, some states, like California, have more restrictive rules), although it is best to take them to a recycling center.
bullet mercury oxide and oxide silver button batteries are often collected by jewelers, pharmacies and stores that sell hearing aids to companies that recover metals.
bullet In 1993, 80 and 95% of automobile batteries were recycled

What you can do
The batteries are constantly being reformulated – check the labels
Changes in reducing sources of household batteries
Read labels. Reduction of mercury in alkaline batteries began in 1984 and continues until today. Over the past five years, industry has reduced the total amount of mercury use by 86 percent. Since 1992, more alkaline batteries are manufactured with "No added mercury. "Some batteries, such as the alkaline battery have had a 97 percent reduction of mercury in the product. Newer alkaline batteries may contain about one-tenth the amount of mercury previously contained in the typical alkaline battery. Some alkaline batteries have zero mercury added, and several mercury-free, high strength, zinc-carbon batteries on the market.

Mercury oxide batteries are being gradually replaced by new technologies, such as silver oxide and zinc-air button batteries contain less mercury.

Nickel-cadmium batteries are being investigated. Alternatives such as nickel cadmium and nickel-hydride system are being investigated, but the nickel-cadmium is unlikely to be completely replaced. Nickel-cadmium can be reprocessed to recover nickel. However, at present about 80 percent of all nickel-cadmium batteries are permanently sealed in devices. Changing regulations may result in easier access to the nickel-cadmium batteries for recycling.
Prevention of Solid Waste battery

To reduce waste, start with prevention. Starting with prevention creates less waste leftover or waste to become potentially dangerous. The following are the steps to prevent household battery waste.

Bullet Check to see if it has batteries on hand before buy more.
bullet suitable for the elements of the task buy hand operated that work without batteries.
Look Bullet batteries that have less mercury and metals heavy.
Bullet Consider rechargeable batteries for some needs, but remember that also contain heavy metals such as nickel-cadmium batteries.
Rechargeable Batteries
Results of rechargeable batteries a longer life and use less battery. Rechargeable batteries contain metals but still heavy metals such as nickel-cadmium batteries. When disposing of rechargeable batteries, recycle if possible.

The use of rechargeable nickel-cadmium can reduce the number of batteries in the waste stream, but may increase the amount of heavy metals entering the waste stream unless they are recycled more efficiently. Since 1992, the percentage of cadmium in nickel-cadmium batteries was higher than the percentage of mercury in alkaline batteries, replacement may only replace a heavy metal for another, and rechargeable batteries using the energy resources in recharging.

Rechargeable alkaline batteries are available with chargers.

Where to recycle batteries

Recycling of non-rechargeable batteries is increasingly common, but can still be a challenge to find a local drop-off location. Recycling household batteries RECHARGEABLE is now possible! Battery manufacturers have funded a recycling center joints. To find a center near you that carry them, click here! (In the U.S. or Canada)) (Which types do they take? Nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead * (Pb) rechargeable batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptops, digital cameras, two way radios, camcorders and remote control toys.

Note that California is a bit of a special case. California regulations require recycling more types of batteries to other states. See this page for information details on how and where to recycle batteries in California.

For more information about the program and sponsors, click Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation and if you are looking for companies that can recycle batteries from business and government, see this page.
If you can not find a place above:

Remove the batteries to any of the participating retailers. In the U.S.: Alltel, Batteries Plus, Best Buy, Black & Decker, Cingular Wireless, The Home Depot, the tool Milwaukee Electric, Orchard Supply, Porter Cable Service Center, Radio Shack, Remington Product Company, Sears, Staples, Target, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless and Wal-Mart. And in Canada: Battery addition, Bell Mobility, Canadian Tire, FIDO / Microcell, Future Shop, The Home Depot, Home Hardware, London Drugs, Service Centers Makita Factory, Personal Edge / Centre du Rasoir, RadioShack Canada, Revy, Sasktel, Sears, Sony's store, Telus Mobility and Zellers.

Use the RBRC collection site location, or call the consumer helpline, 1-800-8-BATTERY to find the nearest collection site retail.

No batteries (usually "alkaline") do not yet have a recycling center and just generally be disposed in the garbage. If you have a lot or is a business, check with your operator allows landfill (also known as "sanitation", the "dump" or "fill health "). Waste batteries should not be burned because of the metals, and they may explode. When burned, some heavy metals like mercury may vaporize and escape into the air, and cadmium and lead may end up in ashes.
