ASTM B592 Alloys in Solar Panels
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International issues standards on materials like copper alloys. ASTM B592 is the standard for copper-zinc-aluminum-cobalt alloy and copper-zinc-tin-iron alloy. This standard includes bars, plates, and sheet metal made from these alloys. Copper alloys C66300 and C68800 fall under ASTM standard B592.
Copper alloys in the ASTM B592 family are used to make several key electrical components of solar panels. Alloys under standard ASTM E527 define the identification of alloys according to the Unified Number System. Copper-zinc-tin-iron alloy is identified as Copper Alloy UNS No. C66300. UNS Number C66300 alloy is patented. Copper-zinc-aluminum-cobalt alloy is identified as Copper Alloy Unified Number System (UNS) No. C68800. These alloys can be rolled or annealed. These copper-zinc alloys can have small percentages of manganese, tin, aluminum and cobalt added to increase their material specifications. ASTM B592 alloys are used in electrical terminals and connectors. These alloys are a common electrical connector material, such as connecting solar cell panels to their wiring. They can also be used to make springs and switches. When using mobile solar panels hooked up to a rechargeable battery, the electrical connections to the battery recharger are made from ASTM B592 alloys.
The Rockwell Hardness scale measures how far a material deflects under impact. Copper has a Rockwell Hardness of 40 HRB. Due to the added metals, C68800 falls on the Rockwell hardness scale between 96 and 98 HRB. These alloys are best known for their combination of high strength and corrosion resistance compared to general copper.
Yield strength describes how much stress a material can withstand before it begins to deform. Yield strength for ASTM B592 alloys fall between 82 and 129MPa. Yield strength for raw copper is 43.5MPa. Tensile strength describes how much weight a material can withstand before necking. The tensile strength specification is 565 through 889MPa. This increased strength and corrosion resistance is critical in solar panels, which are exposed to weathering and varying current flow.
When a solar panel is turned on when a switch is moved from the off position to the on position, a copper alloy contact on the switch touches a circuit to activate an item. The copper alloy used in both contacts is frequently one of the ASTM B592 alloys. The increased hardness of these copper alloys compared to regular copper alloys the contacts to withstand far more usage and contacts, increasing switch life. These alloys are used in electrical terminals and connectors.
The C68800 alloy in strip form is a common electrical connector material. They can also be used to make springs and switches. These alloys can be used as the electrical contacts for battery receptacles. ASTM B592 alloys are also used in electrical relays. The electrical relay in solar panels that controls the flow of electricity to the battery bank is typically made from this family of copper alloys.
