Backyard Shed – 3 things to consider before starting
Do you have the location for your new backyard shed picked out? Have you even got it cleared, levelled and maybe you have even bought all the materials and you are now excited to start building. Are you about to waste your time and money building your backyard shed? Read every word in this article to learn three very important things you might be over looking which will end up wasting your time and money.
Ok, here are the three very important things you need to know before starting you shed that will make building your shed last forever.
Do you need a permit?
Most people don’t do the research before starting to build their shed, so you’re on the right track. Sure you can build a shed without a permit but if the local authorities find out they might make you take it down. It’s easy to get a permit and will save you time and money so please for your sake just look into it. You shouldn’t have a problem getting one on such a small building.
If you are planning to wire, your backyard shed, with heat and lights then you should definitely look into getting a permit. These laws are in force for the safety of your family and anyone living near you, even though they might drive you up the wall.
Just imagine what your neighbour hood would look like if anyone could just build whatever they wanted. It would drive your property value down and might even make it hard to sell your house. Make sure you do the research and find out if you need a permit and follow the guide lines.
Picture this you have just finished building your shed and you and your family are out admiring it. You see a city truck pulling into your driveway and the city worker asks to see your permit? Do you pull out your permit, or do you try to explain to him that you did not know you needed one?
Quality shed plans are necessary.
Unless you are a professional carpenter, I suggest having a good set of shed plans. Having a set of plans will help you avoid mistakes that you might not see coming. A professional carpenter uses plans to build a house to make the job go smother and avoid making costly mistakes.
It is no different for you building a backyard shed. You need to make sure that a professional designs the plans. There is nothing worse than missing information when trying to build something. The location of your shed.
Make sure that the area you pick to build your shed is not going to flood in the winter. Most people build their sheds in the dry seasons so they might over look this critical factor.
If the area you have decided to build your shed is very wet in the winter there are a couple of things you can do. If you have somewhere to drain the water, you could lay drainpipes in the ground to dry up the area. If the area is even slightly wet after a good rain make sure you build your backyard shed well above the highest potential flood level.
